Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Kodiak M2
In the late 1990s a customer approached us looking for a portable texture machine that had the performance of a big rig, but with a catch. This customer was spraying texture in remote villages in Alaska and needed his sprayer to fit into small bush planes for transport to his job sites. We went to work on something that would meet these requirements and the Kodiak was born. It is designed for easy maintenance and clean up, and importantly, it uses the same rotor stator style pump as AST’s big rigs. The Kodiak pump gives you the performance of a big rig in a much smaller package.
The Kodiak M-1000 was the first generation of the Kodiak, first produced in 1997. The second generation of the Kodiak, known as the Kodiak M2, was launched in the following years.
2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the Kodiak portable sprayer. Pictured is the second generation of this unit, the Kodiak M2.
“…it requires very little maintenance so it’s always good to go. We have only replaced a couple parts on it over the years…”
– Jordan Nance, All State Drywall – Yuma, AZ
In this 25th anniversary of the Kodiak portable sprayer, let’s head down to Yuma, Arizona to meet Jordan Nance:
Jordan Nance is the owner of All State Drywall. His company still owns and operates a first generation Kodiak M-1000 from 1997, one of the first Kodiaks ever produced.
Jordan shared some information about the history of his first generation Kodiak and sent us some footage of sprayer Aron Tejeda applying an orange peel texture. Below you will find footage of the 25 year old sprayer in action and an interview with Jordan.
First Generation Kodiak M-1000 Still in Action After 25 Years
AST: Where is your company located?
Jordan: We are located in Yuma, AZ.
AST: What type of projects do you spray?
Jordan: Mainly commercial. Some multi-housing.
AST: What patterns do you spray?
Jordan: Orange Peel
AST: When did you purchase this original Kodiak?
Jordan: My dad (Ed Nance) purchased this new in 1997.
AST: What is the story of this Kodiak you have?
Jordan: My dad bought it brand new to spray EIFS finish in 1997, then he used it mainly to spray orange peel drywall texture. It has also sprayed fireproofing and air barrier material. He handed it down to me in 2016 when I started All State Drywall LLC.
AST: What has your experience been like with the Kodiak over the years?
Jordan: The reason this machine has lasted so long with us is that we can bring it to places a big spray rig can’t go, and where a smaller texture sprayer won’t be productive. We can carry this thing to the third floor of a building and start spraying immediately with mud boxes instead of mixing powder bags (with water that sometimes isn’t nearby on these jobsites) in a big machine on the ground and don’t have to worry about not having enough hose. Also, it requires very little maintenance so it’s always good to go. We have only replaced a couple parts on it over the years, and amazingly everything we’ve needed is still readily available.
Though the Kodiak M2 is most commonly used for spraying drywall texture, the Kodiak is used by contractors all over the world for pumping and spraying various materials including EIFS materials, log home chinking and fireproofing materials.
